LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) networks are a type of recurrent neural network designed to handle the problem of long-term dependencies have revolutionised the field of natural language processing and other sequential data tasks.

Introduction

LSTMs are designed to handle the problem of long-term dependencies in data, which is crucial for tasks such as language modeling, speech recognition, and machine translation.

LSTMs were introduced in 1997 by Sepp Hochreiter and Jürgen Schmidhuber. They have since become a popular choice for tasks that require processing sequential data

Traditional recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are limited in their ability to handle long-term dependencies. They can only maintain a hidden state for a short period of time, which makes them unsuitable for tasks that require remembering information for long periods.

Without a way to handle long-term dependencies, RNNs are unable to capture complex contextual relationships in sequential data. This limits their ability to perform tasks such as language modeling, speech recognition, and machine translation.

How does LSTM work?

LSTMs use a cell state to store information for long periods of time. The cell state is controlled by three gates: input, output, and forget. The input gate determines what new information is added to the cell state, the output gate determines what information is output, and the forget gate determines what information is discarded.

LSTMs can learn long-term dependencies, handle irregular time series data, and perform well on tasks that require processing sequential data.
